Leslie Chai
Ir. Leslie Chai is the Vice President for Commercial in the Business Development department at Sarawak Energy, a state-owned vertically integrated electricity utility and energy development company in Sarawak, Malaysia. An electrical engineer by profession, he has over 30 years of experience with Sarawak Energy, holding various technical and leadership roles in power system planning, renewable energy, interconnection, and commercial.
Ir. Leslie played a key role in advancing key renewable energy and interconnection projects, including the Sarawak-West Kalimantan interconnection project (2016), Southeast Asia's first integrated hydrogen production plant and refuelling station (2019), and the Sarawak-Sabah interconnection, set for completion in 2024. He is also a leader in championing solar energy growth for Sarawak and driving innovative solutions for ASEAN's evolving energy needs.
With a deep understanding of regional energy markets, Ir. Leslie plays a pivotal role in shaping strategies for renewable energy deployment, focusing on solar and energy storage. He actively supports ASEAN’s net zero vision by leveraging cutting-edge technologies and fostering regional collaboration.
Ir. Leslie is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) with the Board of Engineers Malaysia, a Certified Competent Electrical Engineer (CEE), and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (FIEM). He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) from University of Bath (UK) and Master of Science (Distinction) from Warwick University (UK).
