Strategic Advancements by PLN and PJCI

Strategic Advancements by PLN and PJCI

In a recent interview, Pak Suroso Isnandar, Executive Chairman of PJCI and Director of Risk Management & IT at PLN, provided an in-depth overview of the significant strides Indonesia is making in its energy sector. PLN, Indonesia’s state electricity company, is spearheading these efforts through extensive operations that encompass the entire electricity supply chain—from primary energy to generation, transmission, distribution, and retail.

Highlighting PLN’s operations, Pak Suroso detailed the company’s primary energy mix, which consists of 66.44% coal, 16.39% gas, 13.07% renewable energy, and 4.10% petroleum fuel. PLN’s installed generation capacity stands at an impressive 69,022.17 MW, supported by a transmission network spanning 68,284.24 km with a total substation capacity of 161,617 MVA across 2,327 units. The distribution network extends to 1,034,112 km, with a total substation capacity of 65,508 MVA across 551,303 units. These extensive operations have enabled PLN to achieve a high electrification ratio of 99.63%, serving 85.6 million customers. In 2023, PLN recorded a net profit of approximately USD 1.47 billion, the highest in the company’s history.

As the largest energy consumer in the ASEAN region, Indonesia plays a pivotal role in the collective energy transition efforts of ASEAN countries. These countries are making significant strides toward reducing carbon emissions and integrating more renewable energy sources. Leading this effort, PT PLN is enhancing renewable energy capacity with ambitious projects aimed at developing 35,000 MW of renewable energy by 2024. These projects include substantial investments in solar, hydro, and wind power. Additionally, PLN is advancing smart grid technologies and increasing transmission and distribution capacities to ensure reliable and equitable electricity supply across the country.

The implementation of smart grid technology is critical to achieving Indonesia’s energy vision. Smart grids optimize the efficiency of the electricity grid through real-time monitoring, advanced analytics, and automated controls. They facilitate the seamless integration of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, by enabling better forecasting, grid balancing, and demand response mechanisms. Furthermore, smart grids empower consumers with greater visibility and control over their energy consumption and enhance grid resilience through capabilities like self-healing networks and predictive maintenance.

Indonesia has made notable progress in smart grid and renewable energy deployment. The Dedieselisation, a fuel generation phase out, program aims to replace diesel power plants on isolated islands with renewable energy sources or hybrid systems. The Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) for 2024-2033 targets adding 60-62 GW of renewable energy. PT PLN has been actively developing smart grids, including smart meters and smart transmission systems. The company has signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with global energy companies like EDF and GE Vernova to develop advanced technologies and support the energy transition. The Accelerated Renewable Energy Development (ARED) Program focuses on developing green transmission lines and further smart grid initiatives.

As the Chairman of PJCI, Pak Suroso emphasized PJCI’s focus on advancing smart grid technologies, promoting renewable energy integration, enhancing grid reliability and resilience, and fostering digitalization and innovation in the sector. PJCI operates through various working groups, including Innovation & New Technology, Smart Grid & Internet of Energy, Smart Energy System, and Stakeholders, Policy, & Regulation. For instance, the Smart Grid & Internet of Energy team is developing the Internet of Things (IoT) in power systems and smart cities. PJCI also organizes events, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions to facilitate the exchange of ideas and best practices among stakeholders.

Under the leadership of PLN and PJCI, Indonesia is making remarkable progress in the energy sector. With continued advancements in renewable energy, smart grid technology, and strategic collaborations, the country is well-positioned to achieve a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
