Indonesian state electricity provider PT PLN (Persero) has reported a 5.32% growth in electricity sales, from 270.82 Terrawatt hours (TWh) in 2022 to 285.23 TWh in 2023.
According to the utility, this is supported by the company’s extensification strategy, which allows the company to create new electricity demand that is able to respond to the country’s electricity needs.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo explained that the company’s achievements were largely the result of a change in perspective on business development.
“From what used to be stagnant, backward-looking, and only supply-oriented, it is now a business development that is expansive, dynamic, forward looking, oriented towards demand and customer satisfaction,” he explained.
The company also noted that the business segment was one of the main pillars of growth, reporting an increase of 12.53%. On another note, the industrial segment recorded 30.72% of total energy sales, making this PLN’s largest contributor to electricity sales.
The utility shared that one cause for this growth lies in its extensification strategy, which is carried out through a captive power acquisition programme inviting business and industrial customers to switch from using their own power plants to PLN electricity.
Throughout 2023, 10 large companies participated in the captive power acquisition programme.

PT PLN shared that their extensification strategy was also carried out through the electrifying agriculture and electrifying marine programs, which made it easier for businesses in these sectors to access electricity, allowing for their businesses to be more productive while also achieving environmentally-friendly goals.
“We are ready to continue to be the driving force of the country’s economy by meeting electricity needs throughout the country, especially for the business and industrial sectors,” concluded Darmawan.
