PETRA Drives the Energy Agenda: Bridging Boundaries, Building Prosperity

LANGKAWI, 23 January 2025 –The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) launched the theme for energy sector ASEAN meetings 2025 which is, “Powering ASEAN: Bridging Boundaries, Building Prosperity” to emphasise the need to advance the energy agenda by strengthening relations between ASEAN countries with the hope of achieving collective prosperity and progress in the ASEAN region. This will certainly improve the lives of our citizens through economic growth that prioritises the inclusivity and sustainability agenda. Today is the highlight of the ASEAN Special Senior Officials’ Meeting on Energy, following a series of associated meetings held yesterday.

The meeting adopted the proposed eight (8) Annual Priorities (APs) for the ASEAN energy sector 2025. Mainly, under the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) agenda, the endorsement to sign the APG Enhanced Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) document and discussion of the terms of references (TOR) for the subsea power cable development framework as well as the announcement on the financing mechanism for the APG. Additionally, the Meeting also adopted the endorsement to sign the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement (APSA) Successor Agreement; launching of the ASEAN Energy Efficiency Database and Investment Platform (Building); finalisation of the Renewable Energy Long-term Roadmap (RE LTR); to initiate the development framework for ASEAN Renewable Energy Certificate (REC); endorsement of the policy document on ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026-2030; and the initiation on the development of the framework for Nuclear Power Plant Deployment (NPP).

The meeting also adopted two energy-related Priority Economic Deliverables (PEDs) 2025 outputs, namely the signing of the APG Enhanced MoU and the launching of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026- 2030 documents. These two documents are important for fostering continued MEDIA RELEASE PETRA.100-9/1/4(75) PETRA DRIVES THE ENERGY AGENDA: BRIDGING BOUNDARIES, BUILDING PROSPERITY 2 cooperation among ASEAN member countries in advancing the energy sector, thereby ensuring a secure and sustainable energy supply for the ASEAN region.

The meeting further adopted the launching of the APAEC 2026-2030 policy document, as well as the signing of the proposed APG Enhanced MoU and the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Petroleum Security (New APSA) documents in the upcoming 43rd ASEAN Ministers of Energy Meeting (AMEM) that will be held in September 2025.
